Custom domains
Every site works at yourname.frameroost.photos. On any paid plan you can also put it on a domain you own. You’ll
need to be a site owner, and to be able to edit your domain’s DNS records (usually at the company you bought
the domain from).
Connecting your www address
Section titled “Connecting your www address”-
In your admin, open Domain and enter the address you want — the www one, like
www.yourname.com(or another subdomain, likephotos.yourname.com). Click Connect domain. -
At your DNS provider, add the record the page shows:
Type Name Value / target CNAME wwwcustomers.frameroost.photos -
Wait. It usually starts working within minutes of the record appearing, sometimes up to a day. The Domain page checks on its own; Check now asks straight away.
When it’s ready the domain shows Working, and it gets a secure (https) certificate automatically. There’s nothing to buy or renew.
Your main address
Section titled “Your main address”Your site’s first working domain becomes its main address: the one used in links, private gallery links and
share previews. You can connect up to three domains and choose which one is main, or switch back to your
frameroost.photos address.
Your admin always stays on yourname.frameroost.photos. Going to /admin or /login on your own domain takes you
there.
Making yourname.com work too (without the www)
Section titled “Making yourname.com work too (without the www)”The record above covers www.yourname.com only. Someone who types just yourname.com gets an error until it’s
set to redirect to https://www.yourname.com. It can’t point at FrameRoost directly, because most DNS
providers don’t allow that kind of record on a bare domain, so the redirect is set up wherever your domain’s
DNS lives. The Domain page walks through this too.
Option 1: your DNS provider’s forwarding (easiest)
Section titled “Option 1: your DNS provider’s forwarding (easiest)”Many registrars and DNS providers (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Porkbun, Squarespace and others) have a setting called
“URL forwarding”, “domain forwarding” or “redirect”. Forward yourname.com to https://www.yourname.com, choose a
permanent (301) redirect, and turn on “forward path” if it’s offered.
Option 2: a free Cloudflare account
Section titled “Option 2: a free Cloudflare account”Some providers (Microsoft 365 and many web hosts) don’t offer forwarding. A free Cloudflare account can run your domain’s DNS and do the redirect, including https:
- Sign up at cloudflare.com, add your domain on the Free plan, and let it import your existing records.
- Compare its list against your current provider’s. Make sure every MX and TXT record came over — they carry your email.
- Check the
wwwCNAME tocustomers.frameroost.photosis there, and set it to DNS only (grey cloud). - Add a record: type
AAAA, name@, address100::, Proxied (orange cloud). It’s a placeholder; the redirect answers before anything goes there. - Under Rules, create a Redirect Rule using a wildcard pattern:
- Request URL:
http*://yourname.com/* - Target URL:
https://www.yourname.com/${2} - Status code 301, with Preserve query string turned on.
- Request URL:
- At the company where you bought the domain, change its nameservers to the two Cloudflare gives you.
Nameserver changes take from a few minutes to a day or two to reach everyone. Your site keeps working at
www.yourname.com the whole time.
If you move to Free
Section titled “If you move to Free”Custom domains are part of paid plans. If your site moves to Free, visitors to your domain are sent to your
frameroost.photos address instead; move back to a paid plan and your domain works again.
Removing a domain
Section titled “Removing a domain”Remove disconnects it straight away: visitors using it stop reaching your site, which keeps working at its
frameroost.photos address. You can then delete the DNS record.
